The 2016 GMC Terrain gains refreshed exterior styling that includes a power dome hood design, chrome-accented grille in higher trim levels, LED daytime running lights, and new 18- and 19-inch wheel designs. Light Titanium/Jet Black two-tone leather is now available in the Denali trim while Saddle Up leather has been added to the SLT grade. Revised center stack and instrument cluster with a storage shelf and updated graphics and a chrome-trimmed transmission shifter round up the changes inside the cabin. SLT models are now available with eight-way power adjustable seats.

The 2016 GMC Terrain is a five-passenger two-row crossover that’s mechanically related to the Chevrolet Equinox and is available in front- or all-wheel-drive configurations. A 182-hp 2.4-liter I-4 serves as the base engine while a 301-hp 3.6-liter V-6 is optional. Both engines are paired to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Inside the 2016 Terrain, there’s plenty of room for four passengers while cargo space is generous behind the split-folding rear seats at 31.6 cubic feet. Folding down the second row increases the Terrain’s cargo volume to 63.9 cubic feet; however, this is down compared to some of its competitors like the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V . Additionally, the Fiat 500L tall hatchback and Volkswagen Golf SportWagen offer more space without sacrificing fuel economy. Denali models offer more upscale equipment to distinguish it from lower-grade models in the Terrain lineup.

The midsize SUV market is one of the most competitive segments in the auto industry today and GMC has a strong contender with the 2014 Acadia . Combining a simple yet rugged look with a spacious interior and a powerful 3.6-liter V-6 engine that produces 280 horsepower and 271 pound-feet of torque, there’s no reason why the Acadia should be relegated as a second-tier SUV. It’s first rate all the way.

It’s been nearly a year since our Mark McNabb provided a first look at the redesign of the GMC Acadia. Now, we have driven it. Did GMC make good on its promises of better driving dynamics, technology, and efficiency?

In a word, yes. Compared to the first-generation GMC Acadia, the redesigned 2017 model is slightly smaller, a lot lighter, and positively packed with the latest technology. GMC said the newly slimmed-down Acadia positioned the model better between the not-quite- compact, not-quite- midsize Terrain crossover and the gargantuan truck- based Yukon SUV. That strategy is coming into full view that GMC has announced the Terrain will likely take on a similar diet to become smaller and lighter.

The 2017 GMC Terrain remains unchanged for the exception of a new Nightfall appearance package that comes with 18-inch machine-faced aluminum wheels with gloss black spokes and other black trim accents.

The 2017 GMC Terrain manages to deliver 21/31 mpg city/highway with front-wheel drive, and 20/29 mpg with all-wheel drive using the standard 2.4-liter I-4 engine that produces 182 hp and 172 lb-ft or torque. The larger 3.6-liter V-6 has a rating of 17/24 mpg city/highway with front-wheel drive, 16/23 mpg city/highway with all-wheel drive, and produces 301 hp and 272 lb-ft of torque. All powertrain configurations are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

The biggest news for the 2017 Terrain is the optional black-trimmed Nightfall appearance package. This package adds style to the Terrain and includes, 18-inch machine-faced aluminum wheels with gloss black spokes, a charcoal grill with a gloss black surround and accents, gloss black front and rear fascia accents, gloss black rear license plate surround trim, gloss black outside mirrors and black luggage rails. GMC’s IntelliLink infotainment system with a 7-inch-diagnal color touchscreen is standard on the Nightfall Edition, along with available 4G LTE connectivity (Wi-Fi plans are available as an option).
